In reply to: FPJ Using Nasturtium

yes … it can be used in the many stages to create your KNF foods-fpj just the same as any edible plant ..collect new growth for growth hormones, collect flower stage for flower food and so on same as any KNF food…. all parts of Nasturtium are edible even the roots very good choice for a KNF food

Disclaimer: Folks with PhD (permanent head damage) may argue with this , and this is just anecdotal advice.

My recommendation is to decontaminate surfaces with KNF Protectors as well as to introduce fresh Indigenous Micro Organisms into the bedding/pen area, and complete a fresh Soil Foundation Treatment, so that these microbes will sanitize the environment and make it compatible for mammalian life again.

Also, in your entry and exit points, place a pile of IMO so that each person has to walk through it and get on their feet so that the ASF is not being tracked around.

When I saw you had the same question I asked drake and he sent me a couple pictures.

The pictures say to use half dog food+half woodchips+KNF solutions.

Im a bit surprised dog food would work, and am curious about the quality that should/could be used.

I also read a recent post on knfsupport stating they used oats.

Im in North Kohala and am starting my imo1 , we have a shelf stable imo2 and I’d like to trial mediums other than the mill run. Good luck!

Anyone else tried any other medium or have any tips for dog food and or oats?

The specific barn I have is a prefab building. The floor is what matter and it is described here in this University of Hawaii document on Inoculated Deep Litter Systems.

Thanks Bro, much appreciated.

wSo would you recommend to seal the container after the initial 7 days or so?

In reply to: Vinegar remanence

I haven’t done the experiment, but I don’t think just sugar and water will make very good vinegar? I’m pretty sure the acetic acid bacteria need more nutrients to make a good vinegar, so this would lead me to believe that you will have to make it from a new KNF Food.

In reply to: LAB mold on surface

LAB should be super saturated with brown sugar for storage just the whey and sugar ….it looks as if you have added the lab and molasses to water by doing this you are activating the solution for its ready to use state and it does not last long before other microbes like yeast n molds move in feeding on the sugar and water ….it can still be used theres not a bunch of molds you can either skim off the mold or mix it in the LAB should overpower anything you mix into the liquid but use it up before it does go really bad on you…. for long term storage the best way is to super saturate it by adding the dry sugar we lock up all the water and put the microbes into a type of hibernation then when we add the solution to water it brings the microbes back to action …check out this vid from drake on how to super saturate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vcji0fNt5f0

No, agar can not be used for collecting IMO. The reason is that the agar is selective to the microbes. Soil microbes are diverse and will not culture well. You will get microbes, but they are not the microbes you want.

In reply to: KNF pigs plastic liner

The only reason for the liner is to comply with certain federal mandates for funding. My pig pen the way it is set up does not have to comply with State or Federal regulations as long as I do not have more than 4 pigs. If I exceed that limit, I will have to be subject to the Hawaii State Department of Health, and they will require a liner and a full waste management plan.
